When using garden chemicals, always read the label first, making sure that you follow the directions with regard to dilution and application rate. The rates shown have been designed to be of optimum effectiveness and efficiency. Some chemicals such as herbicides and lawn products describe an amount to be used over a certain area, and it is important to keep to these coverage rates.

A selective herbicide is one that can be used on a lawn to kill weeds without killing the grass, e.g. Bin-Die, Kleen Lawn, Winter Grass Killer. Care needs to be taken to avoid spray drift onto nearby garden beds as other wanted plants can be damaged. A total herbicide is one that will kill all plants including grasses, e.g. Glypho, Eraze, Tree & Blackberry Killer. These products cannot be used on a lawn or on any wanted plants as they will damage all green plants.
Keep your pets out of the way while spraying. Once the weed killer has dried on the grass or sprayed area, it is then safe to let the pet back onto the area.
It is recommended that grazing animals and chooks be kept off lawns for two weeks after treatment with herbicides. The exceptions to this rule are Glypho and Eraze, which are safe for grazing animals as soon as they have dried.
All the selective lawn herbicides also detail an area to be covered. This is more important than the amount of water used to achieve this coverage. If you have a sprayer that delivers a very fine spray then you can achieve the coverage required with less volume of water than if you use a coarse sprayer. When a watering can is used, more water is required because a watering can will not give the same coverage as a sprayer.
Do not mow for at least three days before spraying so that the maximum leaf area is available for the weed killer to work on. Also when the grass is mown it exposes a cut area which can result in burning if herbicide is used straight away. After spraying, leave for at least three days, more if possible, to allow the herbicide to be carried around the weed.
The labels for both these products open out to show all directions required on the underside of the flap. Some of the earlier print run of these labels say “Peel Here” slightly to the left of the front of the jar. The later versions have a large panel which says “Open Here for Directions”.
The granular product requires water to activate the chemical and push it down into the soil to get to the root zone of the grass. The liquid products are designed to kill Lawn Army Worm that eats the actual leaf of the grass, and Lawn Grub or beetle that eats the roots. If the problem is Army worm, allow the spray to dry on the leaf, but if the Lawn Grub or Beetle is the problem, then a gentle watering would improve its performance.
